Hello
I’m Serena, the founder of WatKel Tutors.
For nearly four years, I’ve been tutoring and mentoring students who want to feel more confident, less overwhelmed, and more in control of their learning. My teaching style is calm, patient and supportive – I know how intimidating it can feel to ask for help, so I work hard to create a space where students feel heard, understood and never judged.
If you’re looking for a friendly, down-to-earth tutor who will meet you where you are and help you find what works for you, you’re in the right place.
My Story
WatKel Tutors grew out of my own experiences in education and my work supporting young people.
I studied Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham and am now completing an MSc in Environmental Change and International Development at the University of Sheffield. While studying, I began tutoring and mentoring and quickly saw how many students were struggling not just with content but also with confidence, representation, and feeling truly seen in the classroom.
I founded WatKel Tutors to change that – to create a learning space where students, especially Black students and those from underrepresented backgrounds, can see their identities and experiences reflected in the people who support them.
Alongside 1:1 tutoring, I lead The WatKel Collective: a growing Black-led community of mentors with subject knowledge and lived experience, supporting students beyond the classroom.
The Collective is a big part of my commitment to representation, well-being, and lived experience in education – ensuring students have role models who understand their journeys, not just their grades.
Today, WatKel Tutors is about more than homework help. It’s about building confidence, developing independent learning skills, and helping students feel that their goals are possible.
